The central filing offices in both Maryland and Virginia permit some amount of on-line searches of information filed with the state such as information on corporations or other entities organized in Maryland and Virginia and UCC information. Although Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia do not currently have on-line search sites, you can obtain certain corporate and UCC information by calling the appropriate office for each jurisdiction. This page summarizes the information available and provides web site and phone number information for obtaining information in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia.
Public Record Searches in Maryland The Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation ("SDAT") is Maryland's central filing office. The SDAT permits online searches of its records, including all UCC and charter records filed with the state. The searches at this time are free.
UCC Searches permit you to search by debtor name (or lien number) for all UCC financing statements that have been filed against the debtor with the SDAT. Go to Maryland UCC Searches.
Charter Searches permit you to search for specific entities that have filed with the SDAT. In Maryland, those entities that must file with the SDAT are corporations, limited partnerships, limited liability companies, limited liability partnerships and limited liability limited partnerships. General partnerships and sole proprietorships do not need to file with the SDAT unless they are using a fictitious name, in which case they may need to make a fictitious name filing. For those entities that must file with the SDAT, the charter searches allow you to confirm whether the entity has filed and its current status. The charter searches also can help you determine name availability (though the information provided is not always up to date). Go to Maryland Charter Searches.
Public Record Searches in Virginia The Virginia State Corporation Commission ("VCC") is Virginia's central filing office. The VCC permits online searches of its records, including all UCC and charter records filed with the state. The searches at this time are free; however, the VCC requires that you submit an application prior to obtaining access to the records. The application is available on-line and can be downloaded to your computer. Go to Virginia Direct Access Application. You may also call the Corporate Information Section at 804-371-9733.
